AFreweel to Arms

I stop by. They all ask for you. It is a disgrace that they should stay so long that they become friends."" (pg. 65) For all of the soldiers that are in the war girls are the best ways for them to keep their minds off of the war. The women give the men a sense of security and control at the time that causes the men to feel better about what is happening around them. Knowing this by first hand experience Ranildi is very smart when using this to distract Frederic. "Because you are gravely wounded. They say if you can prove you did any heroic act you can get the silver. Otherwise it will be the bronze."" (pg.63) As a reward for Frederic being injured in the war Ranildi bring up the fact that the Italian Army gives out medals for these types of things. Ranildi takes this bad experience of being injured in a pointless war and turns this into a rewarding one for Frederic. This makes Frederic feel better and not that he was injured in the line of duty for no good cause. Having friends like Ranildi, that you can trust and that will do anything for you at a time of need is very important to someone like Frederic who is caught in a domineering situation in life. .
Through Frederic's relationship with Catherine Barkley, Hemingway shows that the simple pleasures in life are very important to the escape of the horrifying reality of war. At the beginning of the novel Frederic met a woman by the name of Catherine Barkley. Immediately Frederic falls head over heels for Catherine and always wants to be with her. "That is how it ought to be. I would eat quickly and go see Catherine Barkley."" (pg. 38) Everyday while the war was going on Frederic would eat his meals as fast as he could then rush just to even get a glimpse of Catherine to keep his mind focused on her and not on the war. As the two get friendlier they are inseparable. When together though Catherine can see that Frederic is upset or worried so she finds the positive in the negative.
