The Escape of the Horrors of War as shown through the novel A Farewell to Arms.
At a time of war one must be able to distract their mind from the unjustified horrors that one may encounter at a time of war. A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway displays one specific character, Frederic Henery, and his experiences in World War I. Through words Hemingway illustrates the unbelievable horrors that one encounters while at war and how they keep their minds distracted from those horrors so they don't "break."" Throughout the novel, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway shows that one must escape the horrors of war and the escape from these horrors through the simple pleasures in life. This is shown through Frederic's relationship with Ranildi, his relationship with Catherine and his repetitive drinking habits. .
Through Frederic's relationship with Ranildi, Hemingway shows that the simple pleasures in life are the most recognized way to escape the horrors of war. In the novel a mortar bomb strikes a fox hole in which the main character, Frederic Henery is feasting on some cheese and wine. Frederic's leg was very badly injured because of this and was taken to one of the many hospitals in Italy. Proving how he is a devoted friend to Frederic, Ranildi shows up at the hospital to visit Frederic. Ranildi keeps Frederic's mind off of the war by talking about Frederic's one love, Catherine. "Have you seen Miss Barkley? I will bring her here. I will go now and bring her here."" (pg. 64) Knowing that talking about Catherine to Frederic keeps Frederic's mind clear and completely focused on Catherine, Ranildi uses this as a tactic to keep Frederic's mind off of the horrorific reality of what the war has done to him. The two also discuss the situation of girls that they would chase after in the beginning of the novel. Frederic asks Ranildi, "Tell me about Gorizia. How are the girls?- " I just go to see if there is anything new.
