He respected elders, and he experienced hardships of colonial life. basically, he learned that life was difficult, which in turn would help make him become strong and patient. His admiration for his older half brother, Lawrence, influenced much of his development. Lawrence was educated in England and he acted like an English gentleman. He was a captain in a brief war, and though he didn't do any fighting, he came back to Virginia with many war stories. These stories interested George, and when Lawrence built his new home on Mount Vernon he was a frequent visitor.
There are many things in people" lives that have occurred and are considered "important," in George Washington's case, there are three main important events that have affected the history of the United States. During the time the American Revolution, Washington managed his lands around Mount Vernon and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses. On January 9th, 1759 he was married to a widow, Martha Dandridge Custis.
On September 1774 the First Continental Congress met. George had his first chance to meet other leaders of the colonies, though he didn't make any speeches or appointed to any committees. On May 10, 1775 the Second Continental Congress met. To show that he wanted some action, Washington wore his red and blue uniform that he had worn in the French and Indian War. He was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army unanimously. During the eight years of the war, he faced many disappointments, but his strong will to win helped him get over the many discouragements. .
On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered. The biggest body of British troops in America had been defeated. Britain gave up all of its territory in America, except for Canada, to the newly formed United States. .
As years after the war had passed Washington was well respected by his men and was also popular with the country. "It came as a surprise when he learned that a group of army men wished him to become king of the United States" (Old, Page 68).
