Florida History


            History: The original inhabitants of Florida included the Timucua, Apalachee, and Calusa people. Later the Seminole migrated from Georgia to Florida, becoming dominant there in the early 18th century. The first European to see Florida was Ponce de Leon in 1513. France established a colony,Afort Caroline, on the St. John River in 1564. Spain settled in St. Augstine in 1565 and later Spanish troops massacred most of the French. Britain's Sir Francis Drake burned St. Augustine in 1586. In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain, but it was returned in 1783. Andrew Jackson led the U.S. invasion in 1818, Spain later gave U.S. Florida in 1819. During 1835-1842 resulted in the removal of most Native Americans in Oklahoma Territory. Florida Seceded from the Union in 1861 and was re-admitted in 1868.
             Geography: 65,755 square miles, ranked 22nd in size. Climate Subtropical in north and tropical in south. .

             St. Augustine is not only the oldest town in Florida it's the oldest in America.
             Senator: Bob Graham is the senior senator from Florida. He was born November 9, 1936, in Dade County, Florida. He married the former Adele Khoury, of Miami Shores, in 1959. They have four daughters: Gwen Graham Logan, Cissy Graham McCullough, Suzanne Graham Gibson and Kendall Graham Elias. The Grahams also have 10 grandchildren. .
             Senator Graham is the son of Ernest "Cap" Graham, a Florida state senator, mining engineer, and dairy/cattleman, and Hilda Simmons Graham, a schoolteacher. He is the youngest of four children. His siblings are Philip Graham, former publisher of The Washington Post and Newsweek; William Graham, chairman of The Graham Companies, Miami Lakes, Florida; and Mary Crow. .
