The existence of a conscience is an intricate and delicate aspect of one's being. It displays one's principles, and what this individual truly feels is right or wrong. And this conscience is what governs what each and every individual feels and does. .
In the play, A Man For All Seasons, by Robert Bolt, the characters of Sir Thomas More and Richard Rich are developed throughout their intertwined relationship as individuals who do not hold their conscience in contempt. More believes that the faith he follows is true, and a violation of his belief would disrupt his blessed existence in front of the eyes of God. Richard Rich, however, looks at progression as the key aspect of his life. And because he does not feel any sort of resistance when he presents himself in a pride less manner, he does not betray his own conscience. Throughout the play, the idea of the conscience acts a key role in determining the outcome of many of each characters progression. And through the results, the principles behind each of their conscience become clarified as they display themselves in a manner in which they feel is true.
Throughout More's life, he has been known and respected for his fair judgments and knowledge in law. But it is his faith in God that sets him apart from his colleagues. And, it is because of this faith, that he is known for his honesty. As Henry request More's support in his divorce, he depicts the reason why he respects him:.
You"re known to be honest . There are those like Norfolk who follow me because I wear the crown, and there are those like Master Cromwell who follow me because they are jackals with sharp teeth and I am their lion, and there is a mass that follow me because it follow anything that moves - and there is you. (32).
The principles that he believes are of Christian roots, and because of this, honesty becomes one of his foremost standards that he lives up to. This, conversely, places More in a position where he must endure the hard tests that the king lays in front of him.
