Reality

As children grow up in life they face many situations that may seem confusing or emotionally important to them. In two short stories "My Oedipus Complex" by James Joyce and "Araby" by Frank O"Conner gives great examples of how a boy from each story goes through a hard situation that gets resolves at the end of the story. Even though there is an age contrast between the two boys in each story, which can be determined even though the author does not tell the audience. The two boys in theses two stories have many similarities and differences. In the story "My Oedipus Complex" there is a young boy named Larry who faces a problem when he thinks he is in competition with his dad for his Mom's love and attention. While in the story "Araby"there is a boy who is likely around the age of twelve who thinks he has met his first love. As the two boys try to face there situations they act similar to one another.
Both Larry and the boy in "Araby" show strong feelings towards a certain someone in each story. Larry shows obsessive love towards his mother and trys to show his mother that he is a better man then his father. Some evidence the author gives to get this point across to the readers is when Larry says to his mother: "I"m going to marry you" and "Because were going to have lots and lots of babies"( pg273). The boy in "Araby" has feelings for his friend's sister which he has never felt before for anybody. Just as Larry did with his mother the boy in "Araby" gets so into his feeling of love he tells the girl that he will pick up a gift for her at the festival she can't attend. Both boys when caught up in the state of love both say things which come to mind to try to make matters for themselves and there loved one. Another comparison between the two boys is the fact that they each think they are a step above another because they feel untouchable. Larry feels that he is a step above his father because his mother tells him she will marry him.
