The Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of the great spiritual buildings of the world. It was built as a Roman temple and later consecrated as a Catholic Church. One of the finest domes made in the 2nd century is the Pantheon of Rome. There is no certainty as to how and why it is created and what it is meant to express, because there are no documents concerning the identity of the architect, the exact dates of conception, its origin or its function. However, The Pantheon was intended to honor the highest gods of the Roman religion. It's unique because its architecture amazingly simple. It is equal in heights and width. It is very symmetrical in its structure. Another uniqueness about the Pantheon is that it has no interior support. As a result, it gave it a huge space to walk into. Because of its huge scale and proportions, the Pantheon gives us an overwhelming effect. Post-and-intel construction, the Corinthian order, the entablature and the pediment are the characteristics fom of the greek temple as inherited by the Romans. The portico consists of three rows of eight columns, 14 m (46 feet) high of Egyptian granite with Corinthian capitals. They support an entablature facing the square, which bears the famous inscription in Latin, attributing the construction to Agrippa, although the extant temple was rebuilt later by Hadrian. .
Unlike Greek and Egyptian buildings which are made of solid stone, this Roman building is made out of concrete. Concrete was poured into hollow walls of concrete brick as though into a mold, then faced with stone veneer to look as though they were of solid stone. This concrete made an important technological breakthrough. The concrete was very cheap and affordable. It made construction easy and faster. It also enabled the building on a grand scale.
The building in general are very symmetric. The moment you enter the Portico or the porch (where the visitors enter), you"ll notice the famous dome.
