Holes Summary

Author/Illustrator: Louis Sachar Publication Date: 1998.
Title: Holes Approximate Grade Level: 4.5.
             .
Summary: Stanley Yelnats has been falsely accused of stealing sneakers from Clyde Livingston, a famous baseball player. He was walking when the sneakers fell from a highway overpass. Of course, when Stanley said in court that the sneaker fell from the sky, the judge thought he was a crazy kid that was lying. Stanley thought that the sneakers falling were a sign of luck, since his father was trying to invent a way to recycle sneakers. His family hasn't had to much luck in the past. It all started with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.
Stanley's unjust punishment is to be sent to a boys" detention center, Camp Green Lake, where boys build character by digging holes in a dried up lake in extreme heat, all day, and every day.
Stanley had a hard time digging his first hole, and everyday after that the holes were harder and harder to dig. If any of the diggers found anything, they were to report to the Warden. In Stanley's second week at camp, he found a small tube with the initials KB on it. A fellow camper, X-Ray, got credit for the discovery, so Stanley continued to work under the heat and harsh conditions.
For the next couple of days, they all dug in the one hole to try and find other objects (even though they were digging in the wrong hole). They found nothing.
When they all go back to digging their own 5 feet holes, Stanley gets all the blame put on him for eating Mr. Sir's sunflower seeds. Mr. Sir takes Stanley to see the Warden, but she ends up harming Mr. Sir instead for taking Stanley there for such a ridiculous reason. When Stanley gets back to camp, his hole is dug for him, and he promises to teach Zero how to read.
Zero learns the alphabet, and he realizes that the "KB" on the lipstick tube that was found could possibly belong to Katherine Barlow, a school teacher who fell in love with Sam, a Negro who sold onions.
