Corey desperately tried to play down his accusation about Putman using his daughter to condemn people. Just like Miller played down the parallel of his play by insisting that "I was just trying to stay out of jail". Both Corey and Miller were found to be in contempt of court.
One other character who stood by her morals all the way though out the play was Rebecca Nurse. She was wife to Francis Nurse a respected man in the community. Goody Nurse is a pious old woman who has often acted as a midwife for women of the town, including Ann Putnam. She is accused of witchcraft by the girls and convicted of the supernatural murder of the Putnam babies. News of her arrest reveals how out of control the situation has become and inspires Elizabeth Proctor to urge her Husband to go to the court with truth about Abigail. Rebecca Refuses to admit witchcraft to the end and is hanged. Just like all the other accused in Salem she was essentially condemned before she went to trial. Those who decided to live by admitting to witchcraft were ostracised by society much as those thought to be communists were blacklisted by McCarthy. People got caught up in the moment and acted irrationally. This can be a common phenomenon in politics. People thought out history have followed and continue to follow charismatic leaders, this is true of politics and religion. People have followed leaders to the point of giving up their own lives, to on lookers there seems to be no rational explanation for this. Perhaps they are looking for a purpose to their lives or are dealing with their own inner Demons or issues. Whatever the reasons are, these rabble-rousers continue to appear at various times in history and are never short of supporters.
McCarthy was looking for a way to get into power and suddenly stumbled as if by accident on to Communism. He found this to be the ideal way to get what he wanted, power and respect from the people because they thought he was doing a good thing; ridding America of communism.
