Those who decided to live by admitting to witchcraft were ostracised by society much as those thought to be communists were blacklisted by McCarthy. People got caught up in the moment and acted irrationally. This can be a common phenomenon in politics. People thought out history have followed and continue to follow charismatic leaders, this is true of politics and religion. People have followed leaders to the point of giving up their own lives, to on lookers there seems to be no rational explanation for this. Perhaps they are looking for a purpose to their lives or are dealing with their own inner Demons or issues. Whatever the reasons are, these rabble-rousers continue to appear at various times in history and are never short of supporters.
             McCarthy was looking for a way to get into power and suddenly stumbled as if by accident on to Communism. He found this to be the ideal way to get what he wanted, power and respect from the people because they thought he was doing a good thing; ridding America of communism.
