             South America for a better life. Was life really better in America? Some .
             people were worse off than they were in their own country . No matter the .
             situation immigrants to the US had their life changed drastically.
             Immigrants came to the US in the 1900s for many different reasons.
             one reason was for religious freedom. The people who came to the US for.
             religious freedom usually had their life changed in a good way because in .
             the US any religion is allowed. Another reason is for a better job. These .
             people were often disappointed, because the jobs were not always available .
             and didn't always pay better than the jobs in their Native country. The last.
             reason that people came to the US in the 1900s was because there was a war .
             going on in their native country. In these cases some immigrants had a good.
             life in America, but some were treated badly if they were from a country .
             that was at war with the US.
             A lot of people's lives were worse than they were in their native .
             country. This happened more frequently in the 1930s during the great.
             depression. People came to the US to look for jobs only to find that over.
             50% of the US population was homeless and unemployed. (Immigration.
             Statistics.Pg 99). When jobs finally opened up, the Americans had a better.
             chance of getting them than the immigrants did. Also, if the Immigrants .
             were finally hired they would be the last one hired and usually the last.
             ones hired were the first one fired. One immigrant said,"In my country,.
             the US was described as a place filled with gold and silver, but now when I .
             come here, I am no better off then I was before . In fact I am worse off .".
             (Immigation stroies Pg. 61) Immigrants were not always treated well.
