The House of The Spirits

Some examples of this magical realism include Clara's ability to locate her dead mother's head without information, and the vision of Ferula's spirit that visits Clara after Ferula's death. Clara can also connect with inanimate objects, such as playing the piano from across the room, or moving items through the air. This complete lack of definition between living objects and inanimate objects is also highlighted with magic realism. Lifelike qualities are seemingly present in everything, and this is especially the case with the big house on the corner', where the Trueba family lives. The house receives a kind of personification, as is reflected in the following quote:.
"He could hardly guess that the solemn, cubic, dense, pompous house would end up full of twisted staircases that led to empty spaces doors hanging in midair, crooked hallways, all of which were Clara's inspiration."" .
The house's linkage with Clara becomes most apparent when, after Clara's death, all of these magical links and spirits fade from the big house on the corner'. It then descends back into a muted regularity under the conservative and distinctly non-fantastical influence of Esteban Trueba, devoid of magical elements. .
Many of the other characters possess eccentric mannerisms, such as Rosa's unearthly beauty, Uncle Marcos' crazy adventures, Blanca and her other-worldly' clay models, and Rosa's fantastical embroidery. These are magical portrayals of author's fantasies. The realistic aspect of magical realism', is what gives a link between the author's fantasies and a worldly context, and this is what sets it aside from the fantasy' genre of book. This realism' is portrayed in the way in which the characters in the novel are aware of the strange qualities of their actions and beliefs, yet accept them as perfectly normal. It is a universe where the author has created the rules, and the characters accept these fantasies' as commonplace.
