When he attempts to speak to them, they dismiss him or rebuke anything he says. Teens today face frustrations with relationships with other people, work and schoolwork, and themselves constantly. They often have trouble knowing how to deal with some conflicts and become frustrated and angry. Feelings of inability and misunderstanding will lead to frustration. Teens today and Telemakhos face frustration within life daily. .
In addition to insecurity and frustration, Telemakhos and contemporary teens have in common that they both have desperate or longing feelings. Telemakhos is desperate to find his father. He speaks of how it would have been easier for him to have his father dead and to have been able to put his hopes and worries to rest then it is to be left wondering about his location and well being. He would have been honored as Odysseus" son if news had gotten back to them that he had died. Hearing Menelaus speak of his father brings tears to his eyes and pain to his heart. Teens today share the same yearning for acceptance and place in their families and in society, and would share the same emotions Telemakhos is dealing with if facing the loss or lack of a parent in their lives. .
An additional similarity between Telemakhos and modern teens is their desire to be taken seriously and to be treated like adults. Telemakhos" mother Penelope notices how mature Telemakhos has become when the minstrel is singing the some about the homecoming of the Achians, and Penelope gets upset and tells the minstrel to stop singing. Telemakhos tells his mother that she is not the only one that lost someone in the war and that he wishes the minstrel would continue with his song. Although Telemakhos" mother realizes his coming of age, the suitors still view him as a little boy. They do not consider him to be mature in any regards, and do not take to heart anything he says. Teens today sometimes struggle with being taken seriously or being able to voice their opinions in a ridicule free environment.
