May the Best Man Win

Many of these students would have become far more successful if they had not been pushed into thinking they would succeed by well meaning benefactors. Administrators at universities used to stress excellence in learning, but now have to focus on racial diversity like it were the main business of the school. When it comes to education, if people do not strive to win it for themselves with their own abilities they will most likely crash and burn (Ellis 1-2). The lack of representation of non-white ethnic groups can be traced back as early as in elementary school age children. In the Gifted and Talented Programs, minority children are often overlooked when nominations are made to these programs because they perform poorly on IQ and achievement tests. Even though these children demonstrate exceptional qualities, they cannot compare to their academically excellent counterparts (Bernal 2).
It is a gratifying event when a hard working, deserving person beats the odds. Part of our American tradition is that with hard work and a little sweat we can prevail. With affirmative action all of that has changed. Take for example Cheryl Hopwood, a woman who applied for admission to the University of Texas Law School in 1992. Cheryl Hopwood was a certified public accountant and worked very hard while earning her degree from California State University. Not only did she work twenty to thirty hours .
per week, she did much for community service in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters charity. Ms. Hopwood was also a single mother to a child who was born with the birth defect Cerebral Palsy. Her grades were also outstanding. She boasted a 3.8 grade point .
average and a high Law School Aptitude Test score. The only thing going against Cheryl Hopwood was that she was white. She was denied admission. Four minorities, including one black and three Mexican Americans, were easily admitted with lower scores and ratings.
