Miseducation of Latinos

English Literature leaves little room for diversity and is taught from a narrow view with little to no room for deviant analysis and conclusions.
             Latinos especially face dangerous discrimination at the lower levels of education because they are thought to be more vulnerable by the elitist who structure the curriculum to oppose the educational advancement. Imagine the credentials of a beginning elementary school student whose teacher has used racial slurs while referring to him in a private student-teacher conference over academic performance. The student may think its ok to be referred to as one of these prejudicial name tags and accepts defeat early on because of his background thinking, "It must be true, my teacher told me." The few that can comprehend the severity of the situation who speak out and tell their parents are then classified as the problem child who is imagining things or who may not have understood what was said because of the language differences. Now a hostile environment is formed where the student is pit against that particular teacher who initiated the enmity and your prospective teachers who have heard of the student's "bad reputation" from the talks conducted in teacher's lounge.
             A product of the New Brunswick Educational System, I guess I was fortunate; I however use the term of fortunate loosely. I came to the United States and was enrolled in the educational system of this city early in the 90s; coming from the Dominican Republic with a first grade education and very learned in whatever first graders are suppose to know, however, the lack of a vast English vocabulary and trying to communicate proved to be a difficult task when trying to function in school. There were no bilingual classes to attend and the first impression my teachers had of me was that of a retarded little boy who needed counseling. I rarely spoke a word because I was always so busy trying to understand what the teacher was saying.
