todays women vs. yesterdays

Her husband, a doctor, has taken her to a summer vacation home for rest therapy; however, the woman's condition worsens and she sees images of faces in the wallpaper of the room. She believes the images are of women creeping behind the paper and she cannot help but to fixate on them. She tries to tell her husband without successful and with time sees the images more and more frequently. In the end, she locks herself in her room and tears off the wallpaper. The story is a depiction of the plight of women's suffrage and the beginning of the rise of feminism, as well as a reflection of the author's own life experiences. The most apparent representation is the pattern on the wallpaper drives her crazy. The wallpaper and the figure behind it is symbolic of women's suffrage. She says the figure is " like a woman stooping down and creeping about." And "shakes the patterns as if she wanted to get out." The figure symbolizes her. At the end when she rips off as much of the wallpaper as she can to symbolically free herself and the figure behind the paper.
One of the strongest images in the "The Yellow Wallpaper", is the paper's pattern, which seems to change with different lightning. Particular traits can only be seen under certain conditions, and they change over time. This could be a symbol of the subtle methods of discrimination that women face, for they can only be seen at certain times and under certain conditions. The wallpaper is representative of societal oppression of women. The pattern on the wallpaper represents to the narrator and to the reader the male-dominated society that is depriving the narrator of her freedom. When she refers to the wallpaper staining everything that it touches, she could just easily be referring to the recognition of society's subordination of women. Another symbol is the paper's odor. It is described as pervasive yet familiar, and makes an excellent metaphor for the pervasive and foul effects of male domination.
