             His popularity won him an election to the state legislature. Andrew served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat. Johnson then served a term as governor of Tennessee from 1853 to 1857. He was going up and his popularity grew stronger. The moment .
             Abraham was soon elected as president in 1860. Johnson became the strongest supporter for President Lincoln at the time. Johnson was called a traitor because he didn't agree with the confederacy as long as the rebels were in charge. His properties were confiscated and he took whatever he had in a small wagon. He soon started his journey to the north and made a stand. He became such a recognized over-night hero. Everyone loved him and called him a true patriot who risked everything just to stand with the Union in the Civil war.
             Abraham was assassinated on April 15. Soon Johnson became President of the United States on April 15, 1865. He was in charge of reconstructing the nation as a whole. Johnson defended slavery. He supported secessionists and abolitionists, which caused some republicans such as Thaddeus Stevens who, disagreed with his beliefs and operations as president. Johnson exclaimed that the Union would provide many minor countries, which would be ruled by miscellaneous forms of government. Tennessee withdrew from the United States, however Johnson supported Union and was the only Southern senator.
