Great Gatsby and the American Dream

Gatsby pictures an idealistic view of Daisy, a picture of how he remembers her to be. He is not able to distinguish what is real and what truly is an illusion. This idealistic view of Daisy includes the view that Daisy loves Gatsby not Tom. When Gatsby had the opportunity to tell her he loved her, she responded by saying she loved him as well. This only completed the first half of Gatsby's portrayal. He wanted her to tell him that she loved Gatsby and that she didnt love Tom any more.
"Oh, you want too much! I love you now v/s isnt that enough?".
This dream of Gatsby leads to his death but as he believed in what he was doing, or trying to do, it didnt matter to him. Daisy ends up being emotionally confused because of Gatsby and Tom, which leads to the deterioration of another aspect of the American Dream.
The desire for spiritual and material wealth dream deteriorated during the novel and was over-powered by the need for money and materials. Daisy does hold a small amount of a desire of spiritual wealth. She wants and needs to know what she will be doing with her life.
"What'll we do with ourselves this afternoon?" cries Daisy "and the day after that, and the next 30 years?".
Tom and Daisy Buchanan helped with the process of deteriation of the American dream of the desire for spiritual and material wealth. They wanted money and materials but because of this, they were careless and held no purpose to their lives.
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy -- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.".
The Buchanan's used their wealth to avoid anything they chose and obtain what ever they wanted. Therefore, the desire for spiritual wealth has been overcome by the desire for material wealth. But it also showed the carelessness of the time.
