When they sit down Holden talks about all the "phonies" in New York and Prep Schools and how he feels like such an outsider. He even goes as far as to say he and Sally should escape together to a log cabin. She is a little freaked out by this .
and tries to tell him how ridiculous he is talking. He immediately gets defensive and calls her "a royal pain in the ass". Holden attempts an apology but Sally starts to cry and Holden leaves without her.A more mature way for Holden to handle the situation would have been tosit through the play and tell Sally he enjoyed and also tell her how they have to do it again sometime but also tell her how he doesn't appreciate Sally flirting with other guys while she is with him. He then should have taken her ice skating and told her about how he enjoys New York and having her with him. He then could have invited her back to the Hotel with him and why knows.
