In the title game of 1998, Tennessee ran right through Florida State and won the national championship. Ohio State finished number two, and were snubbed at a chance to play in the game. In the 2001-2002 season, the Miami Hurricanes were the clear-cut national champions without any question. The real question was how The Nebraska Cornhuskers were able to make it into the game. In the final week of the regular season, the Cornhuskers were absolutely manhandled by the Colorado Buffalos, but they still managed to make it into the title game because of flaws in the BCS. The Cornhuskers didn=t even put up a fight against the Hurricanes, and the questions were again being asked about the legitimacy of the BCS. Each and every year there are a number of teams being left out, so there is reason for change.
The Rose Bowl is nicknamed the AGranddaddy of them all@ because it has so much tradition, and it generally has a top-notch game. Ever since 1946, the Rose Bowl has historically been for the champions of the Big Ten, and Pac-10 conferences. Rivalries and classics were made by the Rose Bowl, and with the BCS system being put in place, the Big Ten and Pac-10 conference champions do not always get to go toe to toe with one another. For the past two years, the Rose Bowl has not even included a Big Ten or a Pac-10 champion for the first time since 1946! The damage to college football=s tradition has already been done, but it can still be fixed with a different method for determining the national champion.
.
There are four BCS games a year. The Rose Bowl is always played on New Years day, and the other games will be played anywhere from the first until the fourth of January. Prior to the BCS games, there are approximately 24 other games being played, but none of them get the national attention that the BCS games get. Yes, they are generally the best games, but smaller schools that get bowl bids are not put in the national spotlight.
