A Culture Once More

But the bag contained winds that was supposed to take him home and when they opened it, winds came rushing out, creating a storm and sending their ship farther from their destination. Similar to present perspectives and our issue on our war with Iraq, President George Bush pursues to seek revenge on Sadaam Hussein. After giving twelve years to disarm their weapons, Hussein refused and Bush is finally taking action to free the innocence and to defeat Hussein. And when Osama bin Laden led his people to strike our twin towers, our army troops continue to trace bin Laden to destroy him and his followers. Enviousness and vengeance continues to have meaning, even if it was thousands of years ago or now at the twenty-first century, rivalry between cultures proceeds through present and future generations.
In both modern and earlier times, one of the most important cultural values was the concept of generosity and hospitality. For instance, when Odysseus was struck by the sea and landed in Scheria, Nausicaa told the young maidens, "Bestir yourselves girls, provide our guest with food and drink, and bathe him in the river where there's shelter from the wind" (Homer 107). The common expectation of the Greeks was to not only provide visitors with a warm welcome of comfort, but also grant them gifts and offerings to make them feel as if they were at home. Almost every place Odysseus landed, he was presented with fine treatments. "Circe has been spending the interval in hospitable care for the party in her house. She bathed and anointed them with olive-oil and gave them all tunics and warm cloaks to wear, so that on their arrival they would find them enjoying a comfortable dinner in the hall" (Homer 167). Odysseus spent several nights in favorable care, and even became Circe's lover, forming a bond between each other. The code of hospitality helped strangers continue with their journeys and develop chains of friendship with new people.
