Full Circle and the speckled Band are two very different examples of murder mysteries. Describe some of the ways in which they are different and some of the ways they are the same. How is language used by the authors to create an atmosphere of suspense that makes you want to read more?.
In my essay I am going to compare and contrast two different types of detective stories, The Full Circle & The Speckled Band. . The typical elements of these detective stories never change, this is apparent in 'Speckled Band' by Conan Doyle and 'Full Circle' by Grafton. These two stories were set in different times, 'Speckled Band' in the late nineteenth century and 'Full Circle' over one hundred years later in modern day America. The detective, villain and victim are the main three characters commonly found in all detective stories; they are certainly apparent in these two stories that I am going to compare and contrast. The detective Kinsey Milhone tells 'Full circle' in first person narrative, 'Speckled Band' is also told in first person narrative, however, Dr Watson who is the detective Sherlock Holmes' Side kick tells us the story.
In 'Speckled Band' as the story comes form Dr Watson Conan Doyle sustained a sense of mystery in not telling us what Holmes is thinking directly, where as in the full circle the story comes from Kinsey Milhone and it is exactly what she is doing and what she is thinking. .
Sue Grafton wrote "The Full Circle" in the 1980's. Sue Grafton is famous for writing short detective stories; the name of the detective is Kinsey Millhone. Kinsey Millhone is a female private eye who needs to work for a living, as needs an income. Kinsey works hard on the case and gets emotionally involved. She is willing to help the police and unlike Sherlock Holmes she works alone. The Full Circle is a book set in modern times as it uses modern forms of transport. .
