Beowulf


            
             The great English literature begins with Beowulf, a masterpiece of heroic epic. The poem includes many vivid and adventurous stories of Beowulf. In the story, Beowulf is portrayed as a brave warrior who often fights the most vicious and powerful monsters in order to save the world. Although the story was created around 800 A.D., Beowulf is still considered a real hero from modern perspective because of his distinct universal heroic traits: physical power, leadership, and cleverness.
             Powerful physical strength has always been a typical trait of a hero. The almighty strength of Beowulf enables him to defeat the ferocious monster and save the world: "they have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war" (p. 18). Today, people still idolize heroes with great physical powers; both fictional and real world have examples of such heroism. For example, popular fictional super heroes such as Superman and Spiderman all have supernatural strengths. Their extraordinary performances not only fascinate people, but also fanaticize fans worldwide. In real world, World Wrestling Entertainment is a great example of heroism of physical power. World Wrestling Entertainment is one of the biggest corporations in the world now, and the reason it is extremely successful is because of their utilization of heroic schemes in their fighting plots. Oftentimes, some muscular, brave wrestlers such as The Rock or Triple H will jump into the ring and help out the bad the situation, much like Beowulf, which fans are absolutely fanatical about such heroic acts. To sum up, Beowulf processes super strength, and people today are still captivated by such physical heroism. .
             Another significant trait of an all-time hero is Beowulf's outstanding leadership skills. In the story, he promises to "purge all evil from Danes with help of his man" (p. 18). During his fighting against Grendel, his subordinates have followed his command successfully, which consequently brings advantage to the battle.
