A Good Night Sleep Summary


            
             This Scottish short story is about George Lockhart, a sleepless, divorced teacher. Every night when he tries to get some sleep, he hears a lot of noise from the street and his neighbours which often are having a fight. But this night something softly bumps at his door in his flat. It was a young girl maybe in her early twenties sitting on his doormat. When George tried to apologise she bit his head of. George asked if she had any place to go, but she told him that she was a homeless and that she had been sleeping in stairs for a long time. George thought it was strange that she was so young and homeless at the same time, but she explains annoyed that many young people are homeless. The girl asks full of prejudgments George for a cigarette and she arrogant show him her appreciation when he hand her the cigarette and lighter. When he offers her his son's bed, she simply refuses to spend the night at his flat. George tries to insure her that he isn't going to do anything when she sleeps, but she still won't sleep in his boy's bed. Lockhart goes back to his hall and abruptly he again hears some noise outside the door. He goes out and sees the neighbour just in time to close his door. The neighbour informs him about how a junkie had tried to sleep in the staircase, and he proud tells how he asked her to leave. George goes back to his apartment and decides that the next team to discuss with the students should be homelessness.
