Mercy Killings

When a person has been in an accident and is put into a coma, how long are you expected to wait? Do you need to keep them alive at the expense of your car? Your house? Your personal safety? How about when they are old, brittle, and can no longer breathe without pain? Do you expect them to have to wait another year of agony, of suffering, for them to die ofnatural? causes?.
Peter Singer tells his view on euthanasia (mercy killings) and why they should take place in some cases. It is a hard thing to decide, because in some cases the person might get better, and in some he might get worse. If there is a 90 year-old man who can't live without pain, which is more of a crime. Killing him, or letting him live? You really have to look at the pros and cons of both sides of the issue. One one hand, killing him will end his pain, but on the other hand, it cut off the chance for him to get better. Personally, I am a utilitarian. I decide each one case by case to see if he can get better, if it looks like he might, or if it looks like he might be better off.dead. Many people think it is insensitive to release someone of their life support, but leaving them on it may be more of a burden than a life saver. It is a hard case to decide, and it is made all the worse when it is someone who cannot communicate their wishes, or is not conscious enough of what is happening to decide.
Another similar thing that relates to euthanasia is abortion, when you know they will grow up into a terrible life. That usually leads to adoption, but we discussed in another entry whether it really is, indeed, killing someone if you have an abortion.
I don't think you should kill someone if they are mentally unable to live their lives (not comatose, but rather mentally ill). In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, one of the characters kills a mentally crippled character in an act of mercy, but was it really right to do so? Was the man really suffering? In conclusion, I think you really need to take it case by case and decide a) are they in pain, b) can they get better?, and c) is there a reason not to?.
