Standardized Testing

This method of learning is not beneficial to the student because the student never actually learns anything when the information is not applied. A multiple-choice test succeeds in its intensions; it does test how well the student knows the readings of the subject. Although multiple-choice tests may accomplish their purpose, the purpose is the part of the test that is actually at fault. This is because this type of test encourages a student to study and forget the information. Paulo Freire refers to this type of education as the "banking" method. "Narration (with the teacher as the narrator) leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated content (Gumnior 99)." By this, Freire is saying that when the teacher is lecturing, the student is too busy taking notes on what he or she is saying to actually listen and be involved with the importance of the teacher's lecture. Although multiple-choice tests are at the center of this style of education, not all teachers use this system.
The current system of education does not solely rely on multiple-choice tests. Many teachers use different methods that get students interested and get students to understand the material, which involves both learning and remembering. Such an understanding is especially necessary in classes that a student will need for their future, such as a class that covers material that they will major or minor in. Though it is of great importance in a major, a student really understanding a subject is still important in general education courses. These courses will have little affect on their lives, and they could possibly take something greater away from the class that would help to build the student as a better, and more well-rounded person. It could help them learn to think more clearly, and it might make them a better-educated individual or learned person. In addition, a person could discover that they might enjoy a different major or career path better than their current path.
