The Four Stroke Cycle

The first thing before working on any engine safety is always first, the most important thing to remember is to always wear safety goggles and never horse around because someone could be severely hurt including yourself.
An engine is the building block of a car. It is made up of several parts and each has their specific job. First we start with the crankshaft and the crankshafts job is to convert reciprocating motion to rotary motion, which causes the wheels to move. The pistons, which are connected to the crankshaft, the pistons jobs are to be the recipient of the combustion from the spark which is mixed with the gas-air mixture. The piston are connected to the crankshaft with a rod cap and the rod bolts in between the piston and the crankshaft is something called a bearing, the bearing reduces friction between the metal to metal surfaces. The blood of the engine is the oil; the oil lubricates the bearings and all other moving parts within the engine. The four-stroke cycle is the foundation of the engine. The first stroke is the intake stroke which the intake valve opens and the air and gas mixture enter the combustion chamber. The second stroke is the compression stroke and when that occurs the piston heads towards the bottom of the cylinder and then starts to rise to the top. The third stroke is the power stroke and as the piston rises to the top it goes to the highest possible point in the cylinder and when it is at that point the gas and air mixture is compressed and at that precise moment the spark plug administers a spark which then ignites the gas and air mixture and forces the engine down in the cylinder and turns the cranks shaft. The fourth stroke is the exhaust stroke then as the piston rises to the top of the cylinder the exhaust valve open and the exploded are released into the air.
There are two main types of engine cooling, they are air-cooled and water-cooled.
