The Problem Of Hamlet

After an extremely emotional and distressing conversation with his mother about her affair with the king, he sees his father's ghost. In Hamlet's Revenge by Eleanor Prosser, she points out that this could be a cause of why Hamlet is so vulnerable. Hamlet is hit with the realization that she never loved his father, that her devotion sprung from sheer lust, and that Hamlet's mind is obsessed with obscene imaginings. His grief leaves him spiritually vulnerable (127). Because of these imaginings of Hamlet's psyche, he cannot act upon any situation, which comes his way. What are these imaginings that are taking place in Hamlet's mind?.
A.C. Bradley points out that Hamlet is great example of a melancholic. His bursts of emotion and changes of feeling and mood prove to be a danger to both Hamlet and the people around him such as Gertrude, Ophelia, Laertes, the King, and Polonius (110-111). In the bedroom scene with Gertrude, Hamlet kills Polonius. Because of this criminal act he now becomes an enemy of the state. The sad fact is that Hamlet could have prevented all of this if only he did not concern himself with his own feelings and put aside his emotions for his mother. Only once was Hamlet truly able to set aside his emotions and act upon them. .
Hamlet for some reason or another does not want his mother to become involved with his actions in any way. "Hamlet does not want to take any action whatsoever until .

he is assured that it will not involve his mother" (Jones 47). Could this be because he loves her so much that he does not want to see her harmed even though he has stated many a time that he is repulsed by this incest filled marriage, could it be that Hamlet is merely biding his time for the right moment to fulfill his wish of taking Gertrude? "Hamlet's second guilty wish had been realized by his uncle which is the possession of his mother by killing his father" (Jones 83).
