Julius Caesar , one of William Shakespeare's finest plays , does not have Julius Caesar as its main subject but rather the relationship between two friends as one of its main themes .Marcus Brutus and Cauis Cassius ,probably the most important characters in the play are very close friends and yet so different in character .
Marcus Brutus is a praetor, a judge in Rome . He is Julius Caesar's best friend and loves him dearly . He is the noblest man in this play and is deeply respected all over Rome . As Casca says ,"he sits high in all the people's hearts". In camparison, Cassius is a member of parliament in the Senate House . In Julius Caesar's eyes he is someone to be feared .It is because of his poor reputation ,that he decides to get Brutus into the conspiracy .
A major flaw in Brutus" character is that he is a poor judge of character. Antony who becomes a reason for the downfall of the conspirators is judged by Brutus as a "limb of Caesar". Very much in contrast, Cassius is an excellent judge of character. He tells of the character of Antony so well that every of his predictions based on the character of Antony come true.
Brutus has a strong conscience and this is evident in Act 2 Scene I when his wife Portia talks about how his mood changed dramatically the past few days (the time when he was debating over whether he should join the conspiracy or no. This trait in Cassius seems to be absent .While Brutus is very calm while he is speaking, Cassius is easily excitable and speaks with a lot of emotion. .
