Hamlet

If he but blench,/ I know my course."(II,ii,606-610). It seems that at this point Hamlet is afraid to kill or does not want to kill Claudius because he is delaying so much and is putting on this play instead of just getting it over with. His thoughts have kept him from achieving his plan once again.
Hamlet's thoughtfulness is not always a bad trait for him in the play. It helps him through hard times, helps him figure out more about what is going on around him, and it gives him some leads on what Claudius was planning. In his conversation with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, when they arrive unannounced, Hamlet becomes suspicious of the purpose of his old friends' visit and he is perceptive enough to see through their outside motives into their real intentions: "Nay, then, I have an eye of you.--If you love/ me, hold not off."(II,ii,308-310). After realizing this, he forces them to reveal that they have been sent by the King to find out what is causing his change: "My lord, we were sent for."(II,ii,309). Hamlet did right by getting them to confess that they were sent for by the king to spy on him. Hamlet was very smart by thinking of what he could say if he did kill Claudius. If he did kill Claudius, he was going to claim an act of insanity, "To put an antic disposition on,"(I,v,190), so he would have a just reason for doing it. Hamlet started acting mad even before he killed Claudius so that when he did he would have a reason for it and it would all makes sense because everybody would know that Hamlet was an insane man even before he killed Claudius. He also figured that if he was thought to be insane he would not be a threat to his uncle so he would not be expecting anything from Hamlet at this time. Hamlet had many battles with himself throughout the play. An example of one of his battles is if he should live and avenge his father's death or if he should die and get rid of all the pain and troubles: "To be, or not to be, that is the question.
