platoon

The Vietnam War was a civil war between the North and the South Vietnamese. This was an internal struggle for power and how the government should be reformed. The Vietnam War was a private battle between the North and South Vietnamese, and it did not concern the United States. .
The movie "Platoon" also shows the duality of main through its main character Chris. Chris struggles throughout the whole movie with his light and dark sides. He at first follows the ruthless sergeant Barnes because of his strength and experience. However, Chris later learns that even though he is fighting in a war he can still act humane. It is around this time that he begins to follow Elias, the righteous character in the movie. This relates more to how the United States became after the experience of Vietnam War. The people of the United States saw the horrors that came with victory in war, and they wanted no part of any war that would cause so much damage. Over all both films explain the contradictory logic we as people use in a personal and political sense, by wanting to win at any cost but also remorseful once we realize the harm we have caused.
The next message that can be seen in either move is the removal of racial lines. For example in the film "Full Metal Jacket", when a Vietnamese hooker walks by, many of the white soldiers make racial comments to some of the black soldiers. Instead of offending them, it just makes them laugh and spout out some racial comment about the white soldiers. This racial name-calling in any other situation would almost assuredly cause a fight, but in the Vietnam War soldiers were more concerned with survival than the color of another soldiers skin. This relates to the United States because all throughout this time period white and black Americans were struggling with the race issue and racial tension. By using such derogatory terms in a comical sense makes the name calling less powerful and hurtful to members of either race.
