             One can also count the number of computer terminals around the world; the growth has been rapid and widespread. This incredible growth reflects our dependency on computers. The growth is also one measure of the increasing demand for information processing and retrieval, which can be added to the mi11ions of TV, sets which are now a major part of current interactive information networks. .
             Another way to estimate the growth of the information society is to examine how many information services we now take for granted. For example stockbrokers now take for granted rapid electronic access to market quotations, and their clients depend on these market quotations. This is an area of human endeavour that was untouched by the computer just a decade ago.
             The most significant feature of the information society is that information located at distant locations may be used as if located near at hand, while information one provides may be transmitted to any location quickly and accurately. This is made possible by a seamless information and telecommunications network. The objective is to expand and develop societies in which these benefits are available. To this end, improvements in information literacy taking place in workplaces, schools, and homes in different countries.
             An "information literate" is defined as a person who knows the techniques and skills for using information today in finding solutions to problems. There is a large number of illiterate peoples in the world for example it has been estimated that only about one sixth of the population in the US is information literate. This prompted a call for a major national program designed to achieve universal information literacy in the near future. .
             As the information society evolves, educators are recognising the importance of training more people in the methods of information handling. Steps have been taken to educate children in the use of computers to build a majority literate society in the future.
