The Mariner

            I feel the movie, "The Patriot", gives an accurate description of the way of life during the American Revolution. It accurately depicts the feeling of patriotism and loyalty to a country. In a film who's main focus is war between countries, a deeper war exists, the protection of a family vs. the protection of a country. I think that the people from South Carolina portrayed the typical attitude of Americans at this time. Part of the film involves how blacks were treated during this time.
             Throughout our lives we hear stories about how people were willing to die for their country to fulfill a greater cause. This movie shows the same idea, but from a different point of view, from the view of the families. I feel that it accurately shows the struggle between protecting ones family vs. protecting ones country. This movie does a good job in showing how a typical man is willing to sacrifice his life and the life of his family for a greater cause. There is a moral lesson to be learned from this, no matter what happens, never lose focus of the main cause. .
             The people of South Carolina are represented as being very aggressive. Young men at this time are very anxious to join the army and fight for their country. All of the characters in this movie, except for the main character in the beginning, are very anxious to go to war with the British. The people fighting at this time seem to be willing to fight for a greater cause knowing that they will most likely die in the process. The movie shows how the people, especially men, of this time have a "gung-ho" attitude.
             There is an interesting attitude towards blacks at this time. The whites portray them as expendable people that have no voice of their own. The blacks themselves feel that the have no hope for change. One ironic theme in this movie is that the white people of South Carolina are fighting for freedom, but have never been slaves.
