The States" Rights Party and the American Independent Party


            The States" Rights Party branched from Harry Truman's domestic policy, which was the newly revealed Democratic Party. There were many restless Southerners and after their anti-Truman rebellion failed they decided to hold their own convention in Birmingham, Alabama. Here they selected Strom Thurmond, Governor of South Carolina, to lead their party. This was significant because this was the first break down of the formerly solid Democratic South. The States" Rights Party was also known as the Dixiecrat Party. .
             The States" Rights Party was primarily based around segregation but there were actually five sections of the party's platform. One criticized the "proposed FBI powers." It also introduced warnings that the Republicans and the Democrats both wanted to have a authoritarian police state. Another section condemned "the effort to establish nation-wide a police state in this republic." The overall largest part of the States" Rights Party platform was the broad support of the states" rights. .
             In the election of 1948 Strom Thurmond carried South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. He received 2.4 percent of the .
             final electoral tally. The States" Rights major problems dealt with the facts they said nothing about national defense or the budget.
             The American Independent Party arose around 1968. Its founder was the Governor of Alabama, George C. Wallace, and he was also the party's first Presidential nominee. Wallace's running mate was General Curtis LeMay, a former Air Force Chief of Staff, who actually ended up hurting Wallace's vote count.
             It seems as if George Wallace and his party were against everything. They were against racial integration and had an anti-communist and anti-Washington platform. Wallace was also against the federal government getting more power. The American Independent was supported by many groups out of the South, but received most of their support from the Democrats in the South.
