Ensnared Through Enivronment

In Great Expectations written by Charles Dickens, many themes are depicted. Particularly entrapment since most characters are in predicaments or settings they"d rather not be in. It is a main theme portrayed throughout the book. Such as how Joe and Pip are forced to live under the tyrant-like rules of Mrs. Joe, the way social boundaries are defined to set limitations of many characters while some were able to dismiss them, and finally how Miss. Havisham tries holding on to her past.
Mrs. Joe being the only woman in the household would have been thought of as the kind sister and lovely wife. On the contrary Mrs. Joe was forceful and nasty. Pip, having been orphaned at a young age, was taken in by his older sister. For this Pip is forever indebted to her and must do as she tells him. Joe seems to be a truly good hearted man for he has stayed with Mrs. Joe although she has taken in her younger brother and he must provide for them all. Considering also the fact that Although Mrs. Joe seems to have a cold demeanor she must still have cared deeply for them both because she worked all the time for them because she never took off her apron. Essentially Mrs. Joe is trapping Pip and Joe with her unique type of love.
Social Entrapment was used to separate different classes that were introduced throughout the book, but many characters affected found a way to escape the hold that society had upon them. Pip being brought up in a lower class society had only the thought of being a blacksmith. When Pip had the opportunity to see Miss. Havisham he was exposed to the upper class, thus wanting to become a gentleman. Through mysterious means Pip does eventually become a gentleman, overcoming his lack of social standing. Mrs. Joe is a young woman that has a household to run. Most woman in this scenario would be gentle and do as they were told, but Mrs Gargery so to speak, "Wore the pants," in the family. She controlled the household instead of the husband .
