In 1919 the United States Senate was confronted with the choice of accepting or denying the endorsement of the Versailles Treaty. This document, supported by the triumphant leaders of World War I and the influential President Wilson, led to vast controversial issues. Within this treaty were decisions that would greatly influence land, military procedures, as well as the economy. After much debate, the outcome ended in the U.S. Senate rejecting the treaty and discarding all terms along with it. The Versailles Treaty, although discarded, proclaimed laudable viewpoints, which were impossible to overlook. The Versailles Treaty caused a ripple of chaos, but in the end, the U.S. Senate rightfully denied its authorization. .
The document was rejected by the Senate with ample reason and justification due to ludicrous Articles X and XI. The ill composed treaty caused great disagreement over Article X and XI due to their illogical nature. Article X permitted the members" of the League of Nations to dictate to America when our boys should be shipped "across the sea and that in that event America's voice would not be the determining voice." Furthermore, Article XI stated that the whole league, whether immediately affected or not, "shall take any action that may be deemed wise and effectual to safeguard the peace of nations." These demeaning adjustments to American living made people recall life before the League. .
No warlike action should ever, under any circumstances be issued by anyone with the exception of the Congress. It is said that no warlike actions will be taken without the consent of Congress. With this document however, American troops and ships may be ordered to any part of the world by nations other than the United States. Lodge reminds America that as of now, "no American soldiers, not even a corporal's guard, that no American sailors, not even the crew of a submarine, can ever be engaged in war or ordered anywhere except by the constitutional authorities of the United States.
