E-mail Revolution

E-mail is an advance in technology that has drastically affected the lives of almost everyone. These effects, both positive and negative, have revolutionized the way we communicate amongst each other. Andrew Leonard's article in an issue of Newsweek entitled "We've Got Mail-Always", discusses and disputes the pros and cons of e-mail.
Communication worldwide is now available in the click of a button as opposed to using the traditional postal service that our society has used for years. This convenient way of mailing electronically may seem pleasing, but e-mail has also served as a way for advertisers to bombard your inbox with junk mail, which can be quite aggravating. Andrew Leonard touches on this subject by stating, "E-mail. Can't live with it, can't live without it." The irony in that statement is how dependent upon e-mail our society has become in such little amount of time. Some people would not know what to do if they had to pick up a pen and address an envelope to send a letter. E-mail has truly simplified the way we communicate. E-mail captures what life was like at the end of the 20th century that very few other digital products can claim. Across the globe, 225 million people can send and receive e-mail; therefore a computer is almost something that people must have.
The internet's predecessor, Arpanet, was first developed in 1968. The goal of the scientists was to enable computing centers to share recourses, but e-mail became the internet's most important ability. .
