HENRY IV, was a great example of a politique. During his reign there are three Henry's trying to gain sole contorl of the throne. He defeats Henry Guise and Henry III. He then realizes that no one will respect his authority as king unless he is catholic. So he converts to Catholicism, and becomes Herny IV, as opposed to Henry of Navarre. He justifies his actions by saying "Pairs is worth a mass." He then issues the Edict of Nantes in 1598. It makes Catholicism the official religion of France but allows Protestants to worship in selcet areas, the are given 100 fortified towns, and are guarenteed political privalges. Here he made political unity supreme. He knew taht he would have disuntiy unless he put political unity infront of religious uniformity. .
Elizabeth was also a politique. Whlie Elizabeth was ruler she also had a few people try to overthrow her and take control of the English crown. Her cousin Mary Queen of Scots being one of them. She was ousted from Scotland for being too Catholic, so she fled to England. While staying in the castle with Elizabeth she plots with the Spanish King Phillip to kill Elizabeth. However Elizabeth fiugres it out and has her beheaded. .
While in Engalnd Elizabeth is openly Protestan but has no oppostion to Catholics. However when she is outside of the country she is hesitant to show support for the Protestant religion. For example the Netherlands were under Spanish rule, but they were mostly Protestant and Philip had sent in someone to take control of them and set up a Spanish inquistion in the Netherlands and get rid of all the Protestants. They however are tired of Phillip so they ask Elizabeth to be their new ruler, she denies it and instead provides them with secret military aid. While ruler Elizabeth re-establishes Protestant moderation and there is a New Supremacy Act. It is called the Act of uniformity. She revised the book of the Common Prayer and it becomes more Catholic friendly.
