The Advance


            
             The Advance is a story that puts an African American woman named Carmen in care of the child of a white family, despite the fact that she already has a son of her own to take care. Carmen has to sacrifice looking after her own son, while she watches over a white child so she can make enough money to support her own family.
             Carmen has been with Francoise, the white child, ever since she was a few months and cares for her like her own, but despite that she faces not wanting to go to work quite often because she would rather be looking after her own kids. Each day Carmen faces a two hour walk to work to look after a child that isn't even hers so she can feed her own kids.
             One day, Carmen has to make a choice between going to work and staying home because her son Hector is feeling ill. The problem is that if she does not go to work she is probably going to lose her job. Carmen comes to the decision that she needs to make money, so she ends up going to her job and has some relatives from the village take Hector to the doctor for her. .
             All seemed well at the time, but in the end Carmen finds out after her walk home to the village that Hector had gone away. It turns out that while sacrificing herself to take care of another child so she could support her own; she ended up losing her son in the process and not being there for him in the end.
