After Westphalia treaty, in the 19th and 20th century with the effect of nationalism states increasinlgy took the form of nation states.Nationalism represented a kind of marriage of culture and politics. As Walker argues the creation of nation-state premised the coincidence of state and civil society and national sovereignty became a defining principle of political organization, and the sovereign state the principal vehicle for managing, if not resolving, class, ethnic or religious coflict within the nation.(4). But nation states were also the foundation stone of Europe international relations.
When Germany and Italy completed their unification process, this caused disputes between the newly unified countries and old powerfil countries, such as Great Britain, France, Russia about imperialism. And mainly this disputes led to the world war 1 which was very effective in shaping world politics in subsequent years. The results of WW1 were the reasons of World War 2.
World war 2 influenced the shape of sovereignty at the next forty years with polarization of the world. Capitalist USA and communist USSR took many countries into effect of their hegemonic power. This two ideologically opposite countries used small countries as a threat to eachother.
Cold War ended with the collapse of the USSR which may be seen as the overcoming of USA. And USA became the only superpower of the world.
