Foreskin

" Now he's beginning to see the "charade" of it all, and he begins mourning the passing of an age, the end of heroes. Foreskin realises that not everyone has morals, and that Clean would kick his superior in the head to get him removed from the rugby picture. As critic Sebastian Black puts it, "Foreskin's sense that "this is my earth" has become even more urgent even as its ugliest aspects have manifested themselves." Ken's death makes Foreskin suddenly realise he can no longer indulge in the practice of belonging to two worlds, he can no longer just play the game. The main character finds himself in an identity crisis. Foreskin mourns the loss of the old myths and Lore of rugby that no longer apply to the nation, but he has no idea what the new identity New Zealand must take on will be.
The second type of conflict is external conflict. Foreskin and Tupper come in conflict over the "old myths" and lore of rugby, and Tupper's "kick shit out of everything" philosophy. Tupper is the aging coach of the rugby team. He puts forward the traditional "kiwi" value system, "the town is the team", and the "sense of comradeship", which were taken on after the Second World War. Tupper thinks that everyone is good at heart, "salt of the earth." In Tupper's world, rugby is a test, of going through "the dangers with your mates, and come out stronger for it". Tupper represents the old myths and rugby lore which as we continue through the play, we realise is quickly becoming obsolete.
Foreskin presents a very modern approach to rugby, and life. He talks of "social responsibility" on the rugby field, a response to the kick Ken received in the last game. He challenges Tupper's "kick shit out of everything" philosophy, declaring that Tupper has no idea who the people on the team are; they are simply a collection of "fifteen individuals". Foreskin argues that Tupper is not to know whether his team would take his philosophy seriously, and calls Tupper "a coach who tells his players to go out there and be two-bit morons.
