A Visit to the Getty Museum

Also, a unique characteristic of that time is that artworks were drawn into the books. These books that have works of art inside are known as illuminated manuscripts. Many of these artworks portray people and landscape, which probably show the glamorous lifestyles of the rich. Also I think there are a lot of religious factors in these artworks as well. I remember seeing many portraits of Christ, and these where probably used to reinforce the importance of Christianity and the religious life. Other than these paintings, some sculptures were on display. All of the sculptures were made from bronze, signifying that bronze sculptures were the norm before 1600 A.D. Most of the bronze sculptures were Roman gods, such as Jupiter, Neptune, Venus and cupid. In one section of this exhibit, they had glass artifacts on display. It said that glass was discovered much earlier in time, but it was during the 16 century they discovered the way to blow into the hot glass to make jars and vases. Since the glass artifacts were made almost 500 years ago, it was not the usual clear color but a murky brownish color. But the design and colors used to decorate the glass were unique and artistic. One section that was most interesting to me was where they displayed how the people used to make paper. The paper used back then was not made from trees but from sheep or lamb skin. They would dry it and smooth it out with stone until it was thin and writeable. When you look closely you can see some of the vanes of that animal on the paper. .
The next building I went into was the East Pavilion. Here most of the artworks are from the 1600s. The first thing you will see is the European sculptures of that time, dating from 1600 A.D. to about 1650 A.D. It said that these particular sculptures are baroque sculptures where they represent an instantaneous moment of action. These were interesting to see because of the unique positions they are portraying.
