Refurbishment

Six inner city parks have already been upgraded which is part of an ambitious three year plan to clean up city parks and restore them to their natural beauty.
The six parks include Joubert Park, Donald Mackay Park, End Street parks, JL de Villiers Park, Mitchell Park and Edith Cavell Park.
The Joubert Park services thousand of flat dwellers who live on its perimeter and on weekends it is estimated that sum 10 000 church going people used the park for congregations. Taxi drivers bucketed water from the fountains or opened fire hydrants to fill their buckets, the metal fillings on the large central fountain were stolen years ago, toilets were taken over by drug dealers and public urinating was common but that's all come to an end now. Church groups have been offered alternate venues, taxi drivers now use a tap, the central fountain is to be upgraded, Flowers have been planted, an irrigation system has been setup to turn the muddy patches of the park back into grass and a chess corner has been setup as chess has been played in the park for many years now. Another big issue was the litter found in the park and now 97 bins have been scattered around the park and the number of litterbags filled daily has dropped from 200 to just 40.
Crime has also dropped substantially as they have setup a system of informal guards around the park who alert each other to any possible trouble or danger that may arise.
As the days go by it is more and more possible to see large numbers of families visiting the park for a day of relaxation in a friendly, clean and safe environment. This is seen as a moral victory for the residents in the area as they are absolutely delighted by the new face of the inner city and the peace of mind they now have.
