Charley asks Willy several times what he is talking about during the conversation. For example, Willy hears Ben ask "Is Mother living with you," and he replies by stating that she died. When this happens, Charley asks whom Willy is referring too; however, Willy is so caught up in listening to the imagery Ben that he asks "heh;" and that is when Charley asked who died (1419). So it is quite clear from this verbal exchange that Charley is not aware of Ben being in the room, which means that one can assume that Ben does not exist, but is in fact a hallucination. .
In addition, thorough most of the play, Willy is extremely disorganized and confused. For example, in the beginning of the play, Willy is explaining to his wife, Linda, why he is home from his trip so early. His phrases are just segments of thoughts, as he describes how "the car kept going off onto the shoulder" (1402). He continues by telling her about how he was actually looking at the scenery and he "opened the windshield" to allow a breeze in, and how all of the sudden he was "dreamin" again" and that he was having strange thoughts. Later on the conversation, Linda suggests, if it is warm that Sunday, that they should drive in country and that they could open the windshield. Willy corrects her by saying that "the windshields don"t open on the new cars." She mentions that he said that he had opened the windshield that day. This is when Willy realizes that he thought that he was driving his old red Chevy, proving that his thoughts are extremely disorganized. Another example is when Biff is trying to speak to him about his interview with Mr. Oliver. Biff tries to tell his father that he was not able to get a job with Mr. Oliver because Biff had lied about the position that he held there when he was younger. Every time Biff tries to speak, Willy interjects with a statement about what he thinks should have happened.
