Memoir

The one on the left's blond hair was heavily hair sprayed and I could smell her perfume from 10 feet away. The one in the middle had very short, brown, spiked hair and was sucking and chewing gum with her entire mouth. She said in a terrible Long Island nasal accent, "Aww, huney, are you's aiight? I thought to myself that this lady might have been the one in the wrong room. "Yes. I am fine. Thanks. I am Terence Callahan, John's grandson," I replied as to say, and you are? The one with the short hair and chewing gum said, "Aww, huney, this is Muh-ree-ah, this heah is Al-ice, and I am Duh-neese," and started chomping away at her gum again. She reminded me of Geena Davis in the movie "My Cousin Vinny." "We's the waitresses at George's," she said. That was all she needed to say. George's was my grandfather's favorite restaurant and I can remember going there every time I went to visit him at the office. It was cheap, quick, and directly across the street from his office. He ate lunch there nearly everyday for thirty years. He knew all the waitresses, cooks, owners and their families, and they knew exactly what he wanted before he ordered. "Yaw grandfodda was the most po-lite man I eva eva knew", Alice said, "A real charma. I am gonna miss him so much," and she started to cry. I thought to myself that it was so typical of my grandfather to make friends with these ladies. He was always jovial, had the best manners, and always enjoyed winning the affections of people, especially women.
After the waitresses left, an elderly man approached me and I thought to myself, now this looks more like it. He said, "I am Kim Sweezy, and you are Brad?" I replied, "No, I am Terry." Right away he snapped back, remembering-Oh Terry, the baby." I am the youngest. Always reminded of it too. Mr. Sweezy was one of my grandfather's closest friends and next-door neighbor. He said, "I want to tell you a quick story that I have been telling the whole family.
