Pierre Beauregard


He explained in 1845 that his name change "was merely for the sake of brevity, [his] name being rather a long one, [he] endeavored to shorten it as much as possible (qtd. in ("Pierre Beauregard")."".
             At the beginning of his military career, he was assigned first to artillery and later to engineers (Williams 35). For nearly two years directly following his graduation he was second lieutenant of engineering .
             and designated to the construction of Ft. Adams in New Port ("Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard: 1818-1893-)Rhode Island (Marck). Promoted to first lieutenant in 1839 he was transferred to Pensacola to build coastal defenses, to later be transferred to Batavia Bay on the Louisiana Gulf ("Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA."").
             During the Mexican War he worked as an engineer under Winfield Scott ("Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA."") and was involved in siege operations at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Chapultepec, and Mexico City, where he was twice wounded (Meehan) and received two brevets for gallantry (Tusa). G.T. Beauregard attained the rank of Captain on 3 March 1853 after 14 consecutive years of service ("Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard: 1818-1893-).
             Returning to the U.S. he was sent to superintend the construction and repair of fortifications in Mobile harbor, the construction of a harbor on Lake Ponchartrain ("Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard: 1818-1893-), and clearing the Mississippi of obstructions (Sifakis, Stewart). Beauregard also served as superintending engineer of the New Orleans Custom House for seven years ("Pierre Beauregard"). .
             He worked as a member of a special board of engineers for protecting the defenses on the Gulf coasts of Alabama, Mississippi and Texas and for the protection of Ft. McRee, Florida. He functioned also as superintending engineer of the New Orleans Marine Hospital and quarantine warehouses ("Pierre Beauregard"). Shortly proceeding, Gustave Toutant Beauregard was given position of Superintendent of West Point, and served the shortest term ever, but six days: from 23 to 28 January 1861.
