While continuing to be in charge, Fedors's health was undoubtedly failing. He could not be a part of any administrative duties of government and so left all the responsibilities to the councilors and ministers of the state. As Fedor's health diminished, his sister Sophia took the initiative to control Peter's life. .
Just before Peter's tenth birthday, Czar Fedor died, April 27th 1682. At this point, Peter's elementary education had to be put on pause. "After Fedor's death, the following well-known sequence of turbulent events took place: Peter was proclaimed Czar and the claims of his elder half-brother were ignored".(Klyuchevsky 6) Certain events took place that soon led to the position of joint-Czar, taken by Peter and Ivan. With the two being joint-Czars, Sophia was the regent. .
Peter's education and life at this point was an experience that no other had gone through in history. His education started at the age of three under tutors appointed by a general. Although he was in joint possession of the throne, he was still only ten years old, making it difficult to rule a country. On that note, this is where Sophia comes in. Sophia took care of Peter's affairs such as his welfare, well being and his "friendships". After the death of Alexis in 1676, it was the duty of General Menesius to find the proper tutors for, and tend to the young prince. However, Sophia had found a way to disband Menesius from his work and find a way more suitable to her wishes to raise the young Peter. What Sophia had decided to do was to place the young prince in his own place in a little village a good distance away from Moscow. She arranged for some fifty boys to accompany him to serve as his playmates. Sophia's intentions were to let the boys run around free and do what they please. She was convinced that if Peter were able to be flamboyant and do as he pleased that he would "grow up idle, vicious, and good for nothing".
