Teen Violence

A teen can feel violated and helpless after being a victim to teen violence. At such a young age a teen does not know how to cope with these feelings. Some teens that have trouble dealing with these feelings don't react by lashing out at others. Instead, they direct violence toward themselves. The most final and devastating expression of this kind of violence is suicide. So when a gang does physical harm another teen they are not fully aware of the consequences of their actions, they might believe that they are not doing much bodily damage to their victims. But they do not think about the after effects or how their victims will deal being violated. .
When teens feel helpless they look to others for help. If an adult is not available or unwilling to give them sound advice on what to do that teen will then look towards the second biggest influence in their lives the media i.e. television and the movies. When teens look to these pseudo-authorities they see their role models using guns to solve problems.
In each year since 1988, more than 80% of homicide victims 15 to 19 years of age were killed with a firearm. In 1997, 85% of homicide victims 15 to 19 years of age were killed with a firearm (Center of Disease Control). Teens look to guns as a symbol of power. .
According to a February 1997 report by the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of firearm deaths among children 0 to 14 years old is nearly twelve times higher in the U.S. than in 25 other industrialized countries combined.
This trend is alarming and concerning, the teens of today will grow up to be the adults and leaders of tomorrow. What is to become of a society when a majority of its population had been traumatized in some way by teen violence? A society that has let its children become accustomed to violence in their every day lives committed by their peers. One must question the physiological effects of being scared by your peers, of thinking your contemporaries are dangerous people.
