The Gift

Liz Whittaker, Annie's mother, begins as a strong woman, a loving wife, and a dedicated mother. She is able to spend a lot of time with her children. Her daughter's unexpected death, which was cause by spinal meningitis, causes her to withdraw into herself. She stops cooking for her family, stops wanting to hold her husband, loses weight, returns to work full-time, and completely loses interest in life. Her husband, John, also loses weight, but he turns to work and often works overtime to try and forget his pain. John is not as prominent a character in the novel as his wife and son, but in the first chapter he is mentioned as a devoted, loving husband and father. Tommy, their 16-year-old son, is initially a very bright, straight-A student. He goes downhill quickly after Annie's death. His grades start to drop, he loses touch with his friends, he no longer participates in sports, and he starts eating dinner out every night. The lives of the family members are so changed by Annie's death that none of them feel they can coexist as a family without her. .
Maribeth Robertson is a 16-year-old from Onawa, Iowa. Onawa is two-hundred-and-fifty miles away from the Whittaker's town. Maribeth is a very intelligent and beautiful young lady. She lives with her strict father and unassuming mother, as well as with her younger sister and older brother. She feels oppressed by her father, who will not let her be a normal teenager. Maribeth makes a huge mistake by letting an older boy talk her into drinking and having sex with him one night. The resulting pregnancy is the one situation her father wants to avoid, so he sends her away and tells her not to contact the family until her child is born and is given away. She arrives in the small town where the Whittaker's live and meets Tommy. His friendship with her and subsequent introduction to his family causes an impact on the Whittaker's lives that is enormous and almost like a miracle.
