Airline Deprivation

The FAA, in their initial reaction to the attacks, put in place several measures that ensure maximum inconvenience with minimum effect. According the Newsweek Magazine, since the September 11th attack, there have been at least four instances of people smuggling knives and guns successfully past security, in most cases, just to prove it could be done. Clearly, making people stand in line for hours while ill-trained inspectors inspect their bags I believe this is not the answer and was an immediate reaction to September 11th. The answer is to change the technology to fit the new circumstances. The military also has been given the powers to shoot down planes on collision courses with populated buildings. I also find it necessary to improve general security, this does not intrinsically mean people must be delayed. The airlines have been getting away with making people stand in long lines for years now, they have been able to save on payroll through not having to employ as many employee's. Now that the government has pushed to take over their security role, they now will put on a few more check-in agents, so those passengers are delayed less when first arriving. As well the addition of outside security agencies which are regulated by the government will ensure an unbiased security. .

I believe that prior history of the Federal Aviation Industry and the threat of terrorism. As far back as 1955, terrorist threats against the airline industry have jeopardized the safety and security of airline passengers. The fact that there is a terrorist threat against our nation's airline industry has not changed, but the methods that are employed to bring harm to travelers has grown much more sophisticated.
