In the play Hamlet, each character knows all about the events that happen in the play. They also knew all about the ways that they were going to act while they carried out their plans. They also planned how they would react when everyone else figured out what was going on. Hamlet did plan his insanity. He did so because that was part of his plan to avenge the death of his father. Ophelia planned her insanity as well so that everyone else could feel guilty that her father, Polonius was killed. She mainly directed that act to Hamlet, since he was the one who murdered her father. Claudius and Queen Gertrude put together the whole murder of King Hamlet simply because Claudius was cruel, and wanted more than what he already had. He was greedy and jealous of his brother. All of these characters planned the way that they were going to carry out each of their plans, and they all did everything intentionally, especially Claudius. He used Queen Gertrude to help him in the murder of his own brother.
Hamlet becomes insane after he sees the ghost of his father, the former king of Denmark, and the new king's brother. Hamlet's insanity was very unbelievable. It was so unbelievable because he suddenly becomes rather sane while the play that he puts together on the death of his father is being performed. He was sane enough to put together such a clever play in the first place (scenes 2-3). He knows exactly what is going on and is watching the reaction of Claudius his uncle, the new king. When he stumbles into Ophelia's room the time when he sees the ghost of his father (scene 2), he did that so that attention could be drawn to him. He needed everyone to be paying attention to him as he carried out all of his plans.
Ophelia's father Polonius dies in scene 3, act 4. At that point, she has decided to act insane as well.
